A Glimpse of Stiglitz from Manchester

Having had a lecture from a nobel laurette such as Joseph Stiglitz captured as a momentous moment for me. As a student who is eagered to meeting face-to-face with the 'free trade for all' initiator, I am rushed to Manchester just to see the lecture. I got left by the free-of-charge bus, so I had to take out my 18 quids just to purchase the return ticket to Manchester.

However, I managed to be there on time and fortunately I got the front sit. I am so fortunate because I can see Profesor Stiglitz from about 3 metres ahead. Sympathetic with his grey beard and friendly smile, the crowd applaused at his entrance to podium. I am amazed with his charisma, I don't know why.

The lecture he gave to us mostly based on the 'Free Trade for all' book that he proposed. He mentioned about the failure of WTO aggreements which caused problems for developing countries. Uruguay round, Cancun, Washington consensus, Doha round .. all ends with some extent of failures. Based on his research, at about 70% developed countries benefit from the free trade but 30% less developed countries suffered more than before. This has created 'unity' between less developed countries to puzzle the jargon 'trade liberalisation' and 'globalisation' might be effective to foster them into developed country. Having considered that, free trade for all should be seen as the development round that is affected on all, not partially.

Well, I haven't finished reading his book, though.. Therefore I can't make proper comment on that. To some extent I agree with him that not every western-idealism might be effective to encounter the problems which underpin less developed countries. Hence, the 'clinical economic' proposed by Jeffrey Sachs could be employed to overcome the problem.

A glimpse of Stiglitz has opened my eyes open to brainstorm the ideal way of facing the less developed countries problems. Would free trade be better off for Indonesia or even worse off? Would Porter' s diamond for national competitive advantage can be combined with Stiglitz free trade for all proposal?

Evening Trip to Old Trafford

Sejak pertama kali menginjakkan kaki di negaranya ratu Elizabeth ini, sudah terbayang di mata mengunjungi stadion bola. Maklum, dulu sempet ngefans banget sama olahraga yang satu ini..

Ngga terkecuali dengan Old Trafford yang menjadi salah satu sasaran pemuasan nafsu saya dalam rangka pemenuhan visa sebagai full-time turis. Setelah menunggu sekitar 4 bulan (lama banget bo), akhirnya sempet juga menjajagi kaki di Old Trafford. Klasik banget sich alasan kenapa baru sekarang ke Old Trafford .. apalagi kalo bukan pekara assignments dan reading list yang setumpuk. Maklum, walaupun visa saya full-time tourist dan part-time student, tetep aja naluri kepengen belajar tetep menggebu-gebu, akhirnya saya jadi terjebak ama rutinitas seputar tempat kos-priorsfield-library..

Hari itu, saya melongok stadion Old Trafford bersama Tim Badminton yang sedang bertandang ke Birmingham dalam rangka All England. Ada mas Icuk Sugiarto, Sigit, Chandra, Grace, Hendra. Dari Tim Birmingham ada Pak Surya dan Donke. Kami bertolak dari Birmingham sekitar jam 3 dengan jarak tempuh sekitar 2 jam via motorway.

Saat mobil memasuki pelataran parkir stadion Old Trafford, mulut saya sudah ternganga dengan papan bilbord segede gajah bertuliskan "Manchester United". Duh duh... my dream akhirnya comes true.. Yang tadinya cuman keliatan di TV akhirnya sekarang bisa dilihat dengan mata kepala sendiri.. Decak kagum juga bergumam diantara segenap All England players.. Maklum, dari kesekian kalinya mereka bertandang ke Birmingham, baru kali ini mereka bisa berkesempatan mengunjungi Old Trafford.

Dilihat dari segi fisik, stadionnya MU ini so usual sich, ngga ada yang special. Namanya juga stadion bola, yang ada cuman gedung berbentuk lingkaran yang tengahnya bolong. Dari segi ukuran, ngga lebih gede dari Stadion Senayan lah. Tapi ditata sedemikian apik sehingga banyak turis yang bela-belain datang untuk sekedar foto-fotoan aja di depan stadion ini.

Memasuki reception, kami sudah disambut sama logo Manchester United yang gede banget.. Akhirnya kami menyempatkan diri untuk potret bersama (kayak foto yang di publish ini nih). Receptionnya ramah dan membolehkan kami potret-potret.. maklum, dengan muka memelas gitu kami meminta ijin untuk potret. Ngga kalah heboh, Mas Icuk (yang udah uzur gitu, hehe) juga ikutan foto bareng.

Ohya, salah satu yang menarik di stadion ini yaitu MU Outlet. Di Outlet ini dijual merchandice MU yang kalo di Indonesia harganya selangit gitu. Harga disini katanya sich lebih murah dibandingkan Outlet di luar Manchester (walo diconvert ke rupiah masih aja tetep mahal bo). Saya ngga sempet beli sich karena pas mau ke situ dah keburu tutup toko nya. Sebel euy!

Tapi ada satu hal yang bikin saya sempet pusing. Toilet wanita. Ngga di Inggris, ngga di Jakarta, kondisi Toilet wanita tetep aja menyedihkan. Kotor, bau, jorok.. Apalagi kondisi toilet di Inggris gini yang ngga ada air untuk membersihkan, makin menambah pusing kepala aja. Hanya karena keharusan dan ngga bisa ditahan lagi, akhirnya dengan berat hati saya memasuki toilet wanita di Old Trafford itu.

Well, setelah satu jam asik melihat-lihat suasana Old Trafford ditengah udara Manchester yang dingin banget, akhirnya kami memutuskan pulang kembali ke Birmingham. Dalam perjalanan pulang saya sempet mencontreng Old Trafford dalam daftar pencarian nafsu sebagai Full-Time Tourist saya..
